I am a mixed media textile artist, creating contemporary abstract art. I work mainly with Dupioni silk, a luxurious material with subtle textures, whose chameleon characteristics suit my explorations of ephemeral states.
I am intrigued by equilibriums, exploring states of balance/imbalance that are found everywhere and are constantly in flux – in our lives, in nature, in global affairs. As a student of biology and environmental studies I learned, many years before being green became popular, how sensitive balances are and how any vacuum is rapidly filled by ready and willing organisms. My art is an expression of balance between concepts such as sparseness and complexity, reflection and absorption, light and dark, order and chaos.
In my current work I am using a unit, repeated and rotated, to explore how simple shapes form a complex whole. I set the stage for my art to be ambiguously both simple and complex, favouring a minimal approach while searching for an emotionally and intellectually stimulating conversation with the viewer.
